Steven Gerrard has spoken about his desire to get rid of some of his first-team squad, and Graham Dorrans could be one of those who is moved on, according to The Daily Record.
What’s the story?
Gerrard has given an update on the transfer situation at Ibrox, having brought in Filip Helander from Bologna on Saturday. The Rangers manager has stated that he’s “near enough done” with incomings but would like to trim a “bloated squad”.
The former Liverpool captain has brought in eight new players to Ibrox and he appears to be turning his attention to outgoings now. There are a number of first-team players that could be departing Rangers this summer, and Dorrans is certainly one.
The indoor football skills in the video below have to be seen to be believed…
He featured just three times last season as he required surgery on a knee injury that kept him out for the vast majority of the campaign. The 32-year-old has also been training with the development squad – his days at Ibrox look numbered.
What next for Dorrans?
The midfielder has been incredibly unlucky to suffer such a serious injury just as a new manager is looking to shape his squad. It’s hard to not feel a tinge of sadness for the former West Brom player, particularly as he is a boyhood fan of the club.
At the age of 32 and coming off the back of three seasons blighted by injury though, his options could be limited from here.
The likes of Joe Aribo, Greg Docherty, Glen Kamara, Steven Davis and Ryan Jack have been preferred in Gerrard’s midfield three so far in pre-season and the Europa League qualifiers, so the opportunity to stay at Ibrox looks to be fading fast for Dorrans.
Hearts manager Craig Levein reportedly wants to bring in another midfielder this summer. James Morrison links have been denied and that might be a good opportunity for Dorrans to get some game time at a good level.
