The 30-year-old instantly proceeded to call his United teammates who were involved in the France vs. Germany fixture to make sure of their safety.
And before Tuesday’s clash with Les Bleus, Rooney is happy the game will go ahead as planned, as it will show a strong message to the terrorist that the world is standing against them.
Rooney said: “I’m happy the game’s on. It shows France wants to show these terrorists they’re standing strong against them, and we have to support that.
“It will be a great night of togetherness for everyone to see, for the terrorists to see the world will go on and stand against them.
“I’ve seen the images and the footage, it’s sickening. It’s a sad time. Football globally does a lot for the world and it shows everyone as a unit. The world as one — football has the power to do that.
“The world of football has to stay strong together and I’m sure everyone will do that and try to deal with this situation. Us as players and the fans knows how to do it. Football helps a lot to bring people together.
“I spoke to all my current team-mates at Manchester United, including Bastian Schweinsteiger on the German side.
“Seeing that they were safe and hoping for themselves and their families. Passing my condolences to them, they were so close to it.”
The former Everton striker revealed that he has never gone into a game with this kind of situation, but knows that it would be even harder for the French squad.
“I’ve never experienced going into a game with something like this having happened. You don’t know. But you have to go out there and try to win the game. But it’s a difficult situation for everyone. And particularly the French team.
“But sometimes, when bad things happen, football is the place where you feel more comfortable. Their players might take that into consideration.
“Terrorism is an on-going thing. You never know when it’s going to happen, or where. We have to trust in the security we have as players and hope nothing does happen.
“It’ll be tough for the French players but I’m sure it’ll be a chance for them to do their country proud and I’m sure all the players have felt deeply the last few days and they will give everything they can to do France proud.
“We all represent England and we’ll show our respect to France as well as offering our condolences.
“It was shocking, really. As a footballer, with it being at the stadium, it’s always… there were friends there, and it could have happened to them. It was shocking. It’s hard for the football players.”
England manager Roy Hodgson has also urged the supporters at Wembley to join in the French national anthem to offer their support and show respect for the lives lost.
